Thor actor Chris Hemsworth feels like he’s done playing the role. Hemsworth first made his name in Hollywood playing the God Of Thunder in Kenneth Branagh’s original Thor and has reprised the role in numerous solo adventures and The Avengers movies. Hemsworth put in some serious gym time to play the character, but with each movie, his talent for comedy was allowed to come out more, which was seen in full effect in Thor: Ragnarok.

While the actor has had mixed success outside of Marvel movies in the past, his fortunes seem to be turning around. Previous lead roles in movies like Blackhat and In The Heart Of The Sea proved to be box-office disappointments, and while Ghostbusters wasn’t the success Sony anticipated, Hemsworth’s deadpan turn as secretary Kevin earned him great reviews. His recent war movie 12 Strong performed well, and there’s even talk the fake Dundee trailers he starred in with Danny McBride for the Super Bowl may become an actual movie.

Hemsworth current contract with Marvel comes to an end with The Avengers 4, and the star confirmed to Australian Breakfast show Sunrise (via Digital Spy) that he’s ready to move on from the character:

My contract’s coming to an end, we’ve just finished the last two Avengers. Who knows what the future holds.

He then clarified that while he feels his time as the God of Thunder is done, nothing has been set in stone at this stage:

Of course, Hemsworth’s future with the character will likely depend on how the events of The Avengers 4 unfold for Thor, which won’t be revealed until 2019. Kevin Feige has already mentioned how the current version of the MCU will come to an end with the movie, paving the way for a new generation of heroes to take over. Whether there’s a role for Thor in the next phase, or if Hemsworth is even interested in reprising the role again, wouldn’t be known for awhile to come.

We felt like we reinvented the last one in a big way. It felt refreshed and re-energised. We might have a conversation if there’s another great script that comes along. But at the moment that’s it."

For the time being, the actor is keen on taking a break from acting. Since his Thor breakthrough he’s starred in numerous blockbusters back to back, so after finishing The Avengers 4 he wants to take time out to focus on family. When it comes to future movies, he’s cast doubt on his involvement with the next Star Trek movie, where he was due to reprise his role as George Kirk from the J.J. Abrams reboot. Now that Tarantino has come onboard with his R-rated take, those plans may have changed. He’s also expressed an interest in playing James Bond, but doubts he would be offered the role.
