A new report may suggest that David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens is no longer in development, and there’s a chance that the film’s characters could be added to the Birds of Prey adaptation instead. At the moment, Warner Bros. has eight DC Comics-related movies in active development (aside from Aquaman and Shazam!), including Suicide Squad 2. It’s widely believed that Margot Robbie’s next appearance as Harley Quinn will be in the sequel, which has The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor attached, but that’s not the only Harley Quinn-related project in the works.

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films also have a Birds of Prey adaptation in development from Bumblebee screenwriter Christina Hodson. And Ayer is working on a Gotham City Sirens movie alongside Captain Marvel scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Also, in summer 2017, Screen Rant exclusively revealed that Warners had a Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff in development, which Robbie might tackle in the near future from Crazy, Stupid, Love directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. That’s a total of four Harley Quinn DCEU projects in the works, but according to a recent report from The Wrap, there are only three movies in development: Suicide Squad 2, Birds of Prey, and Joker/Harley Quinn.

The only movie confirmed to be in development that’s missing from The Wrap’s report is Gotham City Sirens. There are two possible explanations: Gotham City Sirens has either been put on the backburner and may not be revisited for another few years, or that Warners has canned the film altogether. We’re going to go with the latter.

As readers may recall, Warner Bros. recently appointed producer Walter Hamada as president of DC Films, replacing Jon Berg, who resigned from the position in late 2017. Hamada hit the ground running when he joined the DC-centered division; he’s already selected directors for Flashpoint. Moreover, it’s possible that he’s taken Gotham City Sirens off the table. After all, the last time we heard about Gotham City Sirens still being in development was prior to Hamada joining DC Films. A lot has changed since then.

Just because Gotham City Sirens may not be happening anymore doesn’t mean the Sirens can’t still appear in the DCEU. A report from 2016 indicated that the Birds of Prey movie would also contain the Sirens, so it’s possible that DC Films - under Hamada’s leadership - is going back in that direction; pitting Batgirl, Huntress, and Black Canary (the Birds of Prey), against Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy (the Sirens). That would be an ideal scenario to introduce all six characters and then spinoff the Sirens into their own movie down the line.

Margot Robbie is expected to start filming her next appearance as Harley Quinn sometime in 2018, so audiences shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out exactly what’s happening with the character in the unofficially titled DCEU. But, for now, it looks like it’s not going to be Gotham City Sirens.
