Is cult animated adventure Gravity Falls available to stream on Netflix USA? While Twin Peaks probably isn’t the obvious jumping off point for an animated kids show, it was a key inspiration for Gravity Falls. Creator Alex Hirsch wanted his show to be a mash-up between Twin Peaks and The Simpsons, and the show finds twins Dipper (Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal) coming to the eponymous town to visit their eccentric Great Uncle for the summer. Once they arrive, they’re quickly drawn into a world of adventure and supernatural shenanigans.
There’s been something of a golden age of fantastic animated kid shows in recent years, including Steven Universe and Adventure Time. Gravity Falls sits comfortably beside those series and was acclaimed for its intricate scripts, voice acting, and animation. The series was unusual in that the story it had a clear beginning, middle, and ending, with Hirsch announcing season 2 would be it’s last. He’d envisioned the show as an epic summertime adventure for the twins that had to end eventually. The finale “Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls” aired in 2016, which ended with the kids leaving Gravity Falls.
Despite only lasting 40 episodes, Gravity Falls has a loyal cult following. For fans who want to revisit Gravity Falls or those who want to experience it for the first time, sadly the show can’t be found on Netflix USA. The series used to be on Hulu but was pulled during summer 2019. Instead, Gravity Falls will find a new home on Disney+ when it launches November 2019. Both seasons are also available to buy on Google Play.
While Gravity Falls has ended for now, that doesn’t mean it’s gone for good. Alex Hirsch has said he won’t rule out a return to the title town since he loves the characters and world, so a special or some other continuation is possible. After all, there’s nothing to stop Dipper and Mabel come back to visit their Great Uncle the following summer. Hirsch also returned to the franchise in the form of graphic novel Gravity Falls: Lost Legends, which was published in 2018.
While that in itself is a good sign Alex Hirsch intends to revisit Gravity Falls someday, there are currently no plans for a revival. In the meantime, maybe the show’s arrival on Disney+ - assuming it isn’t buried until the platform’s tidal wave of content - will see it finding a new legion of fans.
