And now, almost a decade after this epic movie came out, if you’re wondering where to watch it- yes, it’s on Hulu. Hulu is one of America’s topmost streaming services and has been a big player in the streaming services market since its launch in 2008. With various subscription plans, an eclectic mix of content, and a huge market, Hulu provides top-notch entertainment to its members and its offerings include the teen cult-classic dark comedy movie, Jennifer’s Body.
Revisiting Jennifer’s Body, A Decade Later
This Megan Fox (you know her from the Transformers franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and most recently from her relationship with Machine Gun Kelly) starrer from the late 2000s, is a movie about a girl who was intended to be sacrificed in some weird creepy demonic ritual but ends up becoming the demon instead. Her nerdy straight-A’s best friend, who is trying to navigate being best friends with a satanic human-eater, is played by America’s sweetheart Amanda Seyfried.
The film also stars Adam Brody of The OC fame, John Simmons and renowned actor JK Simmons. After a series of peculiar events, Seyfried’s character, nicknamed Needy, ends up killing Fox’s Jennifer and gets herself admitted into an asylum- which is where she recounts the events leading to the murder.
The premise of the film, when read straight out of the description, seems like the kind that your nine-year-old boy wants to watch (Roger Ebert was very right to call it the guys’ version of Twilight) and was deemed to be just that at the time of its release. But as the years went by, Jennifer’s Body went on to become the cult classic as you know it today. But how?
From Box-Office Flop to Cult Classic
Jennifer’s Body was released to an almost non-existent, dead response from the movie-going audience, only to be praised and put on a pedestal as a female-power film down the line. While it sounds like a fairy tale, this change in opinion is not shocking in the least with the two landmark paradigm shifts over the last 10-odd years: Time’s Up and #MeToo.
With society’s perception towards the power dynamics steadily changing, so is the audience who deemed this film to be a big load of sex- today, Jennifer’s Body is being praised for being more than just a body. The film finally is getting the credit it deserved and is being recognised as one that was clearly ahead of its time and that the audience of 2009 was not ready for in the least.
You think it’s safe to say that regardless of when Jennifer’s Body comes out, it would have killed. (You see what they did there?) Today, the movie has been used in many film classes as a light take on some of the most pressing issues women face.
